Richard Ely Music

Welcome to Richard Ely Music. I'm glad you found your way here, and I hope you enjoy yourself. My main musical ambition is for many people to hear my songs and share in the joy and delight I experienced creating them.

My songwriting influences might include Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Incredible String Band, and Loudon Wainwright III, among others. I love '60s folk and psychedelia, Patti Smith, Jonathan Richman, and a ton of other stuff in many genres. My current faves are the Ditty Bops.

I play a beat-up Gibson J-45 steel-string guitar, not that it really matters considering my mediocre chops. I'm not a great singer, either, but I'm pretty good at interpreting my own songs, many of which aspire to be both humorous and poignant at the same time.

My latest song (and slideshow) is Sleeping in the Capitol (Feb. 2011), about the political uprising in Wisconsin.

You can also see a video of me performing my song Cows in the White House at YouTube.
